The Curse of ‘Gongkers’
This is about a club I joined when I went to college in Bandung. This club is filled with students that have big interest in Balinese art, specially in traditional music and dancing. It’s named MGG. We had this big interest in the activities so that we did a lot of performances everywhere around Bandung, Jakarta, even abroad, at most of the famous exhibition halls in those cities.
During the years, there was also some up and down, fightings, disagreements, and curses. The curse is the interesting part. So, there was a time when we had one of our player got drop out from the university. And another year went by, another player got drop out too. Then we gathered and wondered why each year all the dropped out students play the same instrument, the ‘Gong’. "Was it just a coincidence? Maybe we should do something about the ‘Gong’". Then we did something in Balinese culture way to honour the ‘Gong’ to get rid off the curse.
After some times, still nobody had enough guts to replaced the ‘Gong’ player. Then, I myself changed my position to the ‘Gong’ player. Years went by, we performed like usual. There was no student got drop out in the first year I played the ‘Gong’, I relieved. Then, I played for another years since I continued my Master degree there. There was no dropped out students from our club anymore. The curse was already gone.
In the middle of our joyfull moments, I wondered that the curse was not gone, it just altered. I realized that I already been in this performance activities for more than 6 years and I can not leave the ‘Gong’ because everybody still affraid to play it. Then we called another curse of the ‘Gong’. "One who take the ‘Gong’ will leave the club immediately or can’t leave it at all".
So that is the curse I have right now. I can’t leave the ’stage’ things, even now or at least yesterday.
